Know what is on the ground before you act
Thermal drone surveys show where animals are and how many there are, before and after a control program. Greyman OPS flies enterprise-grade drones with high-resolution (minimum 640×512) thermal cameras that detect heat signatures from up to 100 m, at night, when most feral species are active.
We hold CASA ReOC (CASA.ReOC.9077), $20m public liability and $2m professional indemnity insurance.
Survey applications
- Feral animal population estimates to plan and measure aerial wildlife management and feral pig control.
- Pre- and post-control counts for landholders, councils and natural resource management groups.
- Livestock counts, including feedlot thermal stocktakes.
- Search and rescue support: finding people and animals at night.
How a survey works
- Scoping: area, target species, access and timing.
- Flight planning: grid, altitude and overlap set for the target species and canopy.
- Night flights with live thermal and recorded footage.
- Counting and analysis.
- Report: counts, maps and recommendations.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a thermal drone wildlife survey?
A drone fitted with a high-resolution thermal camera flies a planned grid, usually at night or at dawn, and records heat signatures. Analysts count and identify animals from the footage to estimate population size and location.
Which animals can you survey?
Feral pigs, deer, goats, wild dogs, foxes, cats and kangaroos, as well as livestock. Thermal surveys also support koala and other native wildlife surveys run by ecologists.
How accurate are thermal drone counts?
We use enterprise-grade drones with at least 640×512 thermal sensors, flown at set heights and overlaps so counts are repeatable. Accuracy depends on canopy cover and weather; we report counts with method and conditions.
Do you fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS)?
We operate under our CASA ReOC (CASA.ReOC.9077). Night operations are part of our standard approvals; BVLOS work needs a specific CASA approval for each operation, which we can apply for where the program warrants it.
What do I receive?
A survey report with counts, maps of detections, georeferenced stills or video, and recommendations for control or follow-up surveys.
